Does Volunteer Work Count on a Resume?
When you are working on a resume you want to make sure you do everything you can to paint a marketable, fully rounded picture of the type of person you are, and the type of employee you can be. Many people think that a resume is just a list of places you have worked, but really it needs to be a picture of who you are and what you can contribute to the company.

Add It If It Matters
Volunteer work should only be added to a resume if the addition will actually matter to the company or in reference to the position you are applying for. If you received important training and experience in an area that will also help you in the position you are applying to, then you definitely want to add the volunteer work. If the company itself places a high value on volunteer work, or the organization you volunteered with is somehow linked or important to the company, then add it. If you worked under someone who is connected with the company, add it. Basically, if the work is relevant to the company, or the position then it is a good addition.
Leave It Out If It's Fluff
You do not need to add volunteer work to a resume if it is completely unrelated to the position, your skills, or the company. When hiring managers are reviewing a resume, they do not need to wade through information that is not relevant.
If you do decide to add volunteer work to your resume, make sure that you add enough details to justify the addition. Simply saying you did volunteer work will not be enough to help the hiring manager see how that was relevant to this position or company.
